时隔52年，桑德兰终于再次闻到了欧战的味道。上赛季，这支刚刚升入英超的“黑猫”不仅成功保级，还一举拿下了联赛第7名，锁定了欧战资格。这是自1973年夺得足总杯后，桑德兰首次获得参加欧战的机会。
对于这一成就，曾带领桑德兰在2000年和2001年连续两个赛季拿到英超第7名的前主帅彼得·里德最有发言权。他告诉《四四二》杂志：“我高兴坏了，能进欧战是一项了不起的成就。这是一家伟大的俱乐部，球迷们令人难以置信。”
同样的第七名，不同的命运
里德当年执教时，桑德兰也曾连续两个赛季排名英超第7，但那个年代，这个名次并不足以获得欧战席位。而如今，莱布斯带领的这支桑德兰，在升级后的第一个赛季就追平了这一队史纪录，并且幸运地赶上了欧战资格线扩大的时代红利。
里德回忆道：“2025年我去看了英冠升级附加赛决赛，我们赢了，太棒了。但我当时想，我们算是勉强过关，必须做好引援才能有机会留在英超。”事实证明，桑德兰去年夏天的引援工作堪称完美。
2亿英镑引援，扎卡成关键拼图
为了应对英超的激烈竞争，桑德兰在升级后的那个夏天豪掷超过2亿英镑用于引援。里德对这笔投入赞不绝口：“我得说，去年夏天的引援太棒了。诺尔迪·穆基耶莱在后防线上非常强悍，布莱恩·布罗比在前场充满力量，而且毫无畏惧。”
不过，在里德看来，最重要的一笔签约是一位英超老熟人——前阿森纳中场格兰尼特·扎卡。“扎卡在中场的级别，天哪，他真是一笔伟大的签约。他是你能找到的最冷静、最有权威的球员。”
里德还分享了他现场观看桑德兰1比0战胜纽卡斯尔的比赛感受：“我去看了对阵纽卡斯尔的比赛，球场里就有一种感觉，特别的事情正在发生。”
双线作战的挑战与希望
尽管上赛季成绩出色，但不少评论员认为桑德兰本赛季可能会陷入挣扎，因为他们需要应对国内联赛和欧战的双线作战。里德也承认这种平衡并不容易：“你永远无法预料一家俱乐部如何平衡英超联赛和欧战。即使我们拥有一支非常好的球队基础，能在大多数比赛中与大多数俱乐部抗衡，但你需要一个深厚的阵容。”
不过，这位前主帅对老东家的未来充满信心：“我经常去那里，你能闻到空气中的成功味道。未来一片光明。”
